HOME SALES – Turmoil in the mortgage market continued to impact Florida’s housing sector in February. Statewide sales of existing single-family homes totaled 8,310 last month while 11,132 homes sold in February 2007 for a decrease of 25 percent in the year-to-year comparison. The statewide existing home median sales price was $198,900.

HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE – A year after making sweeping property insurance changes, Florida legislators are divided between maintaining a consumer – friendly face or allowing homeowner premiums to inch up.
MORTGAGES – Over the last several weeks, the nation’s mortgage insurers have been unrolling their own distressed market policies, eliminating certain loans from coverage and requiring higher credit scores and more upfront money from borrowers.
REAL ESTATE TAXES – Decreasing property taxes and increasing the sales tax would cost 50,000 Florida jobs and $28 billion in personal income. Or it would create 72,000 jobs and boost home construction by $6.9 billion. Two noted economists offer widely different projections.
