FLORIDA PROPERTY TAXES

Allow gambling and use the profits to offset a cut in property taxes? It could happen. The Florida House appears ready to loosen its opposition to gambling in a bid to find common ground with the Senate and end a property tax impasse.

As the Florida Legislature discusses ways to lower property taxes, many homeowners in Florida and across the nation have decided to wage their own battle at the local level. Residents of Lee County (includes the Bonita Springs real estate and Estero real estate markets), for example, filed nearly 2,900 property tax appeals in 2006, more than triple the number in 2005.

HURRICANE

Gov. Crist signs a bill creating a tax-free period to buy hurricane supplies, and a bill requiring many homes to install hurricane shutters is cut back.
